Join the fun at Yonge-Dundas Square for Car Free Day 2009.

On Tuesday, September 22, the City of Toronto and Sierra Club Ontario urge you to leave your car at home, and find alternate means of transportation to celebrate International Car Free Day.
Car Free Day is recognized by 100 million people on every continent and is supported by the Government of Canada and United Nations, as well as leaders of 1,500 cities around the world.

Toronto was the first Canadian and North American city to officially host a Car Free Day in 2001.

The reasons to participate in Car Free Day are many. Most people would be shocked to learn that the average car emits approximately five tonnes of air pollutants and greenhouse gases annually. Vehicle-caused pollution is also linked to a host of health reslated issues, including an estimated 440 premature deaths each year.

By taking public transit, cycling, walking, or carpooling, you can help reduce gridlock, clean our air and build a healthier, greener Toronto.

Join us to recognize International Car Free Day at a special celebration from 11 a.m. to2 p.m. at Yonge Dundas Square. The event, to be hosted by Candice Batista, star of A Greener Toronto, has something for everyone. Come and dance to music by home grown bands Lacerda and Coal Mine Canaries, get physically fit by participating in one of our unique attractions, like life-size chess, or visit one of our many booths focused on car-free transportation.

Stay and listen to Mayor David Miller, who will address the crowd at 1 p.m. with an update on how the city is working to make Toronto’s transportation more sustainable. Immediately following, Mayor Miller will official proclaim Car Free Day.

See you there!
